Cord Blood California
Cord Blood California
Cord Blood California is a new non-profit with the mission of promoting and increasing public banking of umbilical cord blood in California.
Cord Blood is a rich source of stem cells, like bone marrow, that are used to treat nine core diseases including certain kinds of Leukemia, Myeloma, Anemia, and Thalassemia, and trials and tests are ongoing to treat over seventy conditions.
Cord blood is 100 times easier to match than bone marrow, has a lower risk of graft versus host disease, and can be more readily collected and stored. For all of these reasons it's important that we build a national inventory of cord blood that meets patient needs, and there's no better place than California to move this project forward.
With over half a million births annually and the most diverse population in the country, California can play a unique role in moving this project forward. Please browse our website and feel free to contact us with any interest in this project.

This March 4th hearing explains the importance of public cord blood banking, especially in California. This hearing was organized by Assemblymember Portantino in support of AB 52 (Portantino), which would create the infrastructure for California’s public banking program to begin.
